Stephen P. DeFalco
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Prior to joining U.S. Genomics, Mr. DeFalco was at PerkinElmer where he served as an officer in both business development and operating roles. His most recent position was President of PerkinElmer Instruments and Senior Vice President of PerkinElmer, Inc. While there, Mr. DeFalco led the acquisition and turnaround of the $500 Million revenue, 2,400 employee Instruments division. In this role, he launched over 30 new products and successfully completed a number of acquisitions and joint ventures. Mr. DeFalco drove an operations improvement program based on six sigma methodologies. These improvements were the basis of Reader’s Choice Awards from “Today’s Chemist at Work” for Quality in 2000 and for Technology Innovation in 2001.
Mr. DeFalco has also held executive positions at United Technologies, was a senior manager with McKinsey & Company in their high tech sector, and led engineering teams at IBM. Mr. DeFalco holds an MS in Management from the Sloan School of Management at MIT where he won the award for the most outstanding thesis in Marketing and the Alexander Proudfoot Award for academic excellence. Mr. DeFalco also holds an MS in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.
John Canepa
Chief Financial Officer
Prior to joining U.S. Genomics, Mr. Canepa served as Vice President Finance & Administration and Chief Financial Officer of Winphoria Networks, Inc., a venture capital-backed telecommunications company. Under Mr. Canepa’s direction, Winphoria raised in excess of $60M of equity and debt financing prior to its acquisition by Motorola in May 2003. Beyond his CFO activities, Mr. Canepa was instrumental in structuring business development arrangements and in negotiating the sale of the company to Motorola. Previously he was a senior partner in the Boston office of Arthur Andersen, where he worked closely with numerous emerging high technology companies. Canepa also led Arthur Andersen’s worldwide life sciences practice.
Martin Fuchs
Senior Vice President, Product Development
Mr. Fuchs joined USG in December 1999. Prior to joining USG, Mr. Fuchs held a variety of senior positions including COO of Active Impulse Systems, Director of Product Development at Philips Analytical, and Director of Capillary Electrophoresis Development at Perseptive Biosystems. Mr. Fuchs brings over 20 years of experience in product development to USG. He is a pioneer in laser-induced fluorescence based assays and microfluidic separation systems as well as a veteran developer of instrumentation for chemical/biochemical analysis and thin-film metrology. Mr. Fuchs has commercialized numerous products for chromatography, bioanalysis and semiconductor metrology. He is the inventor or co-inventor on more than 20 U.S. patents. Mr. Fuchs holds BSEE and MSEE degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
David Bernstein, Esq.
General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel
Mr. Bernstein joined U.S. Genomics in November 2000 and serves as General Counsel and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel to the company. He is a former chair and co-founder of the Intellectual Property Section of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky & Popeo, a Boston-based law firm. Having worked in numerous areas of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and licensing, Mr. Bernstein brings to USG over 15 years of intellectual property experience in biotechnology, medical device, semiconductor and microfabrication technologies. Mr. Bernstein was formerly Intellectual Property Counsel at 3M Company in St. Paul, Minnesota, and has also been a partner at Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, a Boston-based law firm specializing in intellectual property. He is a graduate of Yale University and holds a law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center.
David Hoey
Vice President, Business Development
Mr. Hoey brings over 15 years of business development and financing expertise to U.S. Genomics. Most recently, Mr. Hoey was Vice President, Marketing and Business Development of InfoLibria, Inc., a developer of Internet infrastructure solutions, and Vice President of Business Development at Molten Metal Technology, Inc., where he developed and maintained corporate alliances and joint ventures both in the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Hoey has completed over $400 million in corporate collaborations and financings. Mr. Hoey also served as consultant to, and Board Member of, Bligh Ventures Limited, a publicly traded Australian VC with strategic investments in biotechnology, software development, and telecommunications.
Tim Germann
Vice President, Sales and Marketing
With over 15 years in the life science industry, Mr. Germann brings extensive business and sales expertise to U.S. Genomics. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Germann managed over $25 million in sales at Affymetrix. His track record includes the successful launch of numerous products in the research tools market. He also held sales and management positions at Molecular Devices Corporation, Stratagene, Genometrix and Incyte Genomics. Mr. Germann holds a BS degree in Business Management from Brigham Young University.
