U.S. Genomics Names John J. Canepa as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer
Senior executive brings over 20 years of biotech and start-up experience

Woburn, MA (October 16, 2003) – U.S. Genomics announced today that John J. Canepa has joined the Company as Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer. U.S. Genomics is a leading developer of single molecule analysis technologies for the life sciences industry. The Company’s platform analyzes DNA, RNA, and proteins without the need for amplification.
“John brings significant business acumen and financial skills to the Company and will play a key role as we accelerate our commercialization efforts. The expertise he gained as a senior partner at Arthur Andersen combined with his real world CFO experience at Winphoria Networks, Inc., make him an outstanding addition to our team,” said Stephen P. DeFalco, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of U.S. Genomics.

Prior to joining U.S. Genomics, Mr. Canepa served as Vice President Finance & Administration and Chief Financial Officer of Winphoria Networks, Inc., a venture capital-backed telecommunications company. Under Mr. Canepa’s direction, Winphoria raised in excess of $60M of equity and debt financing prior to its acquisition by Motorola in May 2003. Beyond his CFO activities, Mr. Canepa was instrumental in structuring business development arrangements and in negotiating the sale of the company to Motorola. Previously he was a senior partner in the Boston office of Arthur Andersen, where he worked closely with numerous emerging high technology companies. Canepa also led Arthur Andersen’s worldwide life sciences practice.

“U.S. Genomics is on the cusp of a major expansion as it moves towards commercialization of its single molecule analysis technology,” said Mr. Canepa. “This scientific team has developed a truly innovative technology, and I look forward to working with the Company’s management team to realize the market potential of its unique platform.”

Mr. Canepa received a Masters in Finance from Michigan State University and BA from Denison University; he also is a Trustee of The Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

About U.S. Genomics’ Platform
U.S. Genomics’ technology allows single molecule detection and analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins without amplification. The Company’s direct detection approach provides researchers the capability to accelerate the development of new drugs and diagnostics. The Company is pursuing two application families based on the technology platform. The first will enable direct single molecule detection to measure RNA and proteins. It is expected to have commercial applications in functional genomics and proteomics and to be available in 2004 with follow-on applications in the diagnostics market. Subsequent applications will advance the commercial introduction of DNA analysis and mapping.
